BIO

Born in Melbourne in 1977, Miranda Skoczek is an Australian artist who graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2004. She has exhibited her painting’s internationally, as well as throughout Australia in numerous solo and group exhibitions.

She unashamedly delights in creating pictures that are joyous and celebratory, and has attracted attention for paintings that focus on pure process, blurring the lines between representation, abstraction, design and the painterly. ‘I’ve grown up in an image–saturated society and I enjoy placing disparate imagery and iconography together in a harmonious, and hopefully, beautiful way. Having travelled extensively, my engagement with different culture’s, most notably ancient ones, has manifested in a practice which borrows from the history of image making.’ Coupled with an awareness of high fashion, and a penchant for glossy International magazines, Skoczek brings together historical references, and the ‘Now’ with more quiet, intuitive mark making, revelling in the tensions they create.

Places experienced, and those imagined, softly rendered marks accompany bold and graphic shapes. Her canvases are immersive, engaging the viewer both physically and emotionally – allowing an escape into a world of fantasy, opulence and the sublime – offering sanctuaries for the self.

Skoczek’s practice has seen paintings acquired by numerous local and International collectors, Artbank, and countless sell out shows in her more than 10 years as an exhibiting artist. Most recently included in Vogue Living’s New Generation – as some of today’s brightest crop of design, art and architecture. Miranda lives in Melbourne with her young son Harper Atticus.
